The Numbers Reconcile. That’s the Problem.

Financial statement fraud is the rarest category of occupational fraud in the ACFE’s Occupational Fraud 2026: A Report to the Nations, at 6% of the 2,402 cases analyzed. It is also the costliest, with a median loss of $1 million.

That combination explains why it is so hard to work. It is uncommon enough that many examiners rarely see it. And when they do, the numbers they are asked to test usually look fine.

When the Reported Figures Look Right

Most fraud leaves a visible gap: missing cash, an unexplained disbursement, a vendor that does not exist. Financial statement fraud works differently. The manipulation happens in what was recorded, not in what is missing. Revenue is recognized early. Expenses are deferred. Liabilities go unrecorded. The statements reconcile because they were built to.

The evidence is in the distance between what was reported and what the underlying transactions show. Closing that distance means testing reported results against the detailed records, across periods, and looking at who was involved in the transactions behind the totals.

A Job That Outgrows the Spreadsheet

Examiners know the tests. Look at entries posted outside normal business hours, by users who do not normally post them, in round amounts, or around the standard approval workflow. Compare revenue with deposits. Look for related-party activity that was never disclosed. Compare trends across periods.

None of these indicators proves fraud on its own. Together, applied to the whole population rather than a sample, they tell you where to look first. But doing that across hundreds of thousands of entries is not a spreadsheet job. And before any test can run, the underlying records have to be ingested, standardized, and reconciled.

Where Sedra Helps

The Sedra Financial Investigation platform takes on the heavy lifting of data preparation. It ingests the underlying records, including scanned and hard-copy documents, normalizes them, and consolidates them in one place. Examiners can start investigating up to 90% faster.

From there, examiners can use the platform to:

  • Drill from financial statement views into the underlying transactions
  • Review trend and pattern views across periods
  • See anomalies flagged across the full dataset by machine learning models trained on real-world data
  • Map the relationships between parties and entities through shared addresses, phone numbers, bank accounts, and other links
  • Return to source data for any finding

Because Sedra shows the flow of money in aggregate and how parties connect, it can help an examiner see transactions with related parties that might otherwise be buried in the detail.

Defensible Because It Is Traceable

Findings in financial statement matters go to audit committees, boards, counsel, and sometimes regulators. They need to withstand scrutiny. In Sedra, findings are reproducible and link to source data, so the path from conclusion back to record is clear.

The same principle applies to professional judgment. Sedra flags and traces. It does not determine intent, and it does not conclude that fraud occurred. The examiner does.

Test One Set of Financials

If you have been asked to test a set of financials and are weighing how much of the underlying data you can realistically examine, we would like to show you another approach. Sedra is verified SOC 2 Type 2 compliant and ISO 27001 certified, so your security team can review it quickly.
